Lancome concealer5/29/2023 Arriving in the West Village and setting up for a Zoom meeting that mattered enough for me to get dressed in a summer suit, I wanted my complexion to walk that same line between polish and laid-back simplicity. ![]() The effect was soft-focus enough for baby-smooth canvases and gorgeous expression lines alike.Ĭontent with my Midwest research and findings, I set out on a trip to New York City, my first since spring of last year. Even when a shade wasn’t a perfect match, it disappeared with purpose: a highlighter for shadowy corners if a bit too light, a believable sculpt if skewing dark. For family photos, I even tried them on a few generations of in-laws who were all willing participants. The formula left my face looking smooth and dewy, like actual skin (makeup artists like Pat McGrath call this phenomenon a “living matte” when spotted in the wild), without traces of fingerprints or chalkiness. ![]() I carried the concealers to the beach, applying them with my fingertips in full, unfiltered light. I decided to take the formula on the road for an annual trip to Lake Michigan, which looks more like an ocean to someone who didn’t grow up here: sand, tidal waves, sun pouring down like a warm bath, while also highlighting every cranny on the skin. ![]() A tiny dot of concealer can stay where you put it or sheer out and carry over to another location without a crack in the finish. Now, seeing this formula in action, I get it. I’ve heard the word stretch used with coverage products and never fully understood the lingo. The other two bisque-y hues did the same. One shade with Buff on the label disappeared into my skin. I had my lingering skepticism, as I opened the silver boxes. This concealer launch is the undercover remix of that formula, with skin-care ingredients like moringa-seed and water-lily extracts to help create 24 hours of moisturizing (cake-free) coverage. Of course, the French house’s products are industry favorites (the lip colors hold their own for cover shoots and red-carpet events), though I’d somehow never tried Lancôme’s number one product: Teint Idôle Ultra 24H Long Wear Foundation. I rarely find a realistic skin match (I describe my complexion as “silver minnow”), and I wasn’t sure one of the three shades I received would be able to compete. Consider me game to try the latest-but I should also mention that I’ve faithfully used the same foundation brand (not Lancôme) since my teens. That was the promise when Lancôme’s new Teint Idôle Ultra Wear All Over Concealer arrived at my door in Chicago. I want to be surrounded by futuristic solutions that flex to my needs the same way I’m adapting and upgrading, all the time, for everyone, for everything. ![]() I want to jump on a plane with a single carry-on so small, it could fit tidily under the seat. I want to think less, not more, about what I look like in the mirror-or the video-conference screen, since that’s not going away. I want fewer steps to my 2021 public face. Like so many of us, I want to make my life easier. Ask me today, and I’ll tell you: I’m changed. I’d come to associate it with a certain artificial, layered-on style-hyper-finessed, powdered-to-death stage-y makeup that, offstage, doesn’t read as modern to me, after billions of YouTube tutorials steadily maxxed out the look. If you had asked me last week, I wouldn’t have necessarily called myself a concealer person.
